JUNE. 10/2009.-Since 2007 The Candelilla Institute in conjunction with the School of Biological Sciences signed a cooperation agreement to develop two important investigations related to the exploitation of the candelilla plant.
a) Vegetative Propagation of Candelilla (Euphorbia antisyphilitica, Zucc.) in their natural habitat.
b) Seed biology and seedling establishment of candelilla Euphorbia antisyphilitica, Zucc.
The research projects that developed during the last two years, and ended in 2009, were focused on finding new cultivation techniques and biological improvements in the seed.
Considering the results obtained in this investigation, it was concluded that vegetative propagation is essential in the reproduction of the candelilla, which produces few viable seeds. So it was also concluded that the reproduction of the candelilla plant from seed can be considered as an alternative to conserve the genetic diversity of the species, and that should be practiced to a discrete scale.
