DEC. 01/2008

Under Mexico’s commitments to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES for its acronym in English) CONABIO, as Scientific Authority, invited the Candelilla Institute to participate at a workshop on the conservation, use and trade of Candelilla (Euphorbia antisyphilitica).

This workshop was held on 16 and 17 December 2008 where the CEO of Multiceras, Noe Marmolejo, gave a presentation concerning the trade of candelilla and how Multiceras has supported for the sustainability of this desert plant.

The objective of the workshop was to gather information on the state of conservation, utilization and trade of candelilla in Mexico to determine their appropriate location in the Appendices of CITES and to ensure that the use and trade regimes are not detrimental to the survival of the species in wild long term.

All this occurred because Mexico is the largest exporter of candelilla and the European community has concerns about high levels of exports.
